With so much heart and grace, Na-Cho Nyak Dun Elder Roger Ellis shared with the Grade 4-7 classes at Jack Hulland Elementary School his personal experiences as a young child forced to attend Residential School. It didn’t take long for the room to fall silent as he shared his captivating story. His messages were so positive, encouraging and inspiring. Here are some of the questions the students asked: Why did nuns teach you and not normal teachers? Because we weren’t allowed to go to normal schools. Did you miss your family? Yes. What was your name there? I was called #73. It took years after leaving school to find my name. What was it like after you left? I was a grown adult before I learned to show affection to another person. My daughters taught me. They asked “Why don’t you ever hug us?” They taught me how to hug.
