May 2023

YFNED is working towards the long-overdue, unified control of First Nations education in the Yukon.

Yukon First Nations Grad

YFNED congratulates all Yukon First Nations Grads who will be at the KDCC this Friday, June 2nd - wear your regalia with pride!

Don’t forget to come by the YFNED table and get your grad box. We’ll also have a survey for you to fill out - and a chance to win $300 in gift cards!

Welcome babies!

“These kids are our most precious resource. They are the ones who walk after us.”

This weekend, Kwanlin Dün First Nation Chief Sean Smith and former Champagne Aishihik First Nation Chief Steve Smith joined us at a ceremony to welcome our Indigenous babies into the community.

Thank you to Kelly Silverfox Creations for the beautiful beaded headbands, and all the cutest models in the territory to show them off!

Numeracy team out and about

Members of the Numeracy Team were in Ross River and Watson Lake this month for math camps. Students from both elementary schools tried being forest biologists by conducting plant surveys. Then they learned how to calculate and represent their data. They also practiced estimation and measurement skills in our "How big is it?" game!

We ended our time there building shelters. Students showed teamwork to make it waterproof and then explained what made their shelter effective!

We also partnered with Aurora Virtual School to run a Math Camp at Mount Lorne at the beginning of May.

Early Years — June activities

All Indigenous families, whether registered with our program or not, are welcome to attend our drop-ins. There will be snacks, activities, beading and knitting supplies, and a chance to see our space and meet the Early Years team.

If you have any questions about the monthly activities, email EarlyYears@yfned.ca, call 867-667-6962 ext. 123 or check out www.yfned.ca/EarlyYears.

We will be closed in mid-June as we move from our location on Black Street to 420 Range Road. Stay tuned for an open house in July.

Looking for new staff!

If you’ve ever thought about joining the team at YFNED, make sure to keep an eye on YFNED.ca/jobs. That’s where we post all our opportunities, including the latest position for an Education Analyst!
