YFNED is working towards the long-overdue, unified control of First Nations education in the Yukon.

First Nation School Board Referendum Vote this January

School attendance-area residents and parents of students at nine schools will be voting Jan 5 - 27 to determine if their school will join the new First Nation School Board. The Schools are:

Chief Zzeh Gittlit School, Old Crow
Grey Mountain Primary School, Whitehorse
Johnson Elementary School & Watson Lake Secondary School, Watson Lake
Ross River School, Ross River
St. Elias Community School, Haines Junction
Takhini Elementary School, Whitehorse
J.V. Clark School, Mayo
Nelnah Bessie John School, White River

Elections Yukon is offering two ways to vote:

Mail-in ballot (Jan 5 - 17) Mail-in Ballots can be requested at the Elections Yukon website or by phone, fax or email.
In-person (Jan 11 - 26) at Elections Yukon Headquarters and other specific days that vary by community.
In-person at the school (Jan 27)

First Nation Education Conference POSTPONED

Due to updated Covid-19 mandates, we regretfully have to postpone the 2022 First Nation Education Conference planned for January 19 - 20.

New Date: MARCH 23 - 24

No need to re-register. Everything stays the same except the dates.

Advocates Rock December

In the weeks leading up to the Winter School Break, our First Nation Education Advocates were busier than ever working one-on-one with students and families, and helping out in classrooms to facilitate First Nations learning activities.

Pictured here are one of the many beading workshops our advocates lead in schools as well as a dry meat preparation activity with elementary students.

An exciting initiative of the Junior Advocates has been the Firewood Program where Indigenous youth learn chainsaw and axe safety and split and deliver firewood to Elders in the community.

In the spirit of generosity and caring for Elders, this attendance and skills initiative also fostered confidence, focus of engagement, and project management skills in these emerging Indigenous youth.

Drive-Thru Community Feast

Set your table and tuck in your napkin, because YFNED is bringing our Community Feast to your home table!

Come to our Drive-Thru outside the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre on Jan 16 from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. to pick up a yummy feast for your family to enjoy.

The YFNED Nutrition Program is funded by Jordan's Principle to ensure all Indigenous kids have equal access to good, nutritious food.

Winter Break Hampers a Huge Success

THANK YOU to everyone who helped distribute the YFNED Winter Break Hampers over the three weeks before school closed for the holidays. Over 1650 hampers were distributed to Indigenous families across the territory.

Mahsi Cho to all the Yukon First Nations who distributed hampers to their citizens.

Shäw nithän to SAVE ON FOODS who went above and beyond to make this program a success.

Gunalchéesh to Pacific NorthWest Freight, A-1 Delivery, Air North and City of Whitehorse

The Winter Break Hampers are a part of the YFNED’s Rural and Urban Nutrition Program, funded by Jordan’s Principle. The program aims to provide equitable and healthy food to all Indigenous children aged 0 to 18 residing in Yukon.

Welcome New Staff

Linda Huebschwerlen, from the Kwanlin Dün First Nation, is joining YFNED as an Early Year Visitor.

Joseph Wallingham, is YFNED’s new Expediter for the Urban Nutrition Program. Joseph is from First Nation of Nacho Nyak Dun.

Temira Vance, is Kaska Dene and starts as YFNED’s Rural Nutrition Coordinator.

Marie Daniels starts a contract with YFNED as the Numeracy Coach.

Ashwin Freyne will be joining YFNED as a Math Advocate.
